A piece of microscopic engineering inflated to enormous proportions, the Ring is a twin critique: first of naive architecture, second of commercialized science. With our larger horizons lost in austerity politics, applied science and architecture have recently evinced a fetish for the inconceivably small, as if our inner lives were the most important to explore. Ring's inversion of scale points to the soft error of prizing the superfluous; it is a cipher for the much larger crisis of conflating the innocuous with the violent. Metamaterials, nanobots, quantum computing, robotic eyes in the sky: our utopian futures will first pass through a sieve of the nightmarish and apocalyptic. Magical and innovative at micro scale; when faced with them at life-size, they will become self-enclosing labyrinths.
