Tall and tapered to a sharp point, the Obelisk is a tower that has been abstracted from function. Its ostentatious height is childish and imperial, simultaneously guarding against attack and provoking one. Ostensibly a victory marker, it chiefly signifies the continuous presence of its author, even when that author is no longer actually there. Some obelisks have stairs ascending their interiors so visitors can have a glimpse of the horizon from its peak, and experience a few moments of vicarious superiority. And though the Suitcase Obelisk does not admit you to its inner core, the empty slice that passes through its core does bring the sun's light and changing shadows back down to those of us on the ground.
