The Klaxon is a fixed speaker, usually silent, but ready at any moment to issue an alarm or series of audible commands. Klaxons embody the ability to amplify a given message, and to control its apparatus of distribution. Suitcase Klaxons are simultaneously metaphoric and literal: they suggest the constant political commands heard everywhere but seemingly issuing from nowhere; and yet, they also invite a visitor to step up and yell right back at the invisible. A silent Klaxon provokes a feeling of readiness in the monument's visitor, a sense that commands could descend upon them at any moment. And indeed, we are ready to be ready: the idea of talking back to a Klaxon is as ridiculous as trying to stuff light back inside a bulb.
