Fence is the root unit of security. For those who want to shut out parts of the world, it remains a powerful device, symbolic if not always efficacious. Decorative on the one side and utilitarian on the other, the Suitcase Fence is an expandable barrier system made of inter-locking panels. It can extend as far as the monument requires, and can bend and pivot along with the landscape. A fence keeps the visitor out from what it encloses, though the dense block formation on its face makes Fence easily to climb. It is a purely aesthetic barrier. Fence nods to those political exceptions that are fast becoming rules, signalling the key geo-political feature of our era: the quiet permanence of what is claimed to be contingent and temporary.
