The column is a narrow, upright mass, often with decorative elements at the top or bottom. Columns delineate and enclose space, producing interiors and exteriors, which make them the base architectural units of a narrative. A row of Columns keeps the boundary intact while allowing sunlight to enter its sacred interior, without ever dirtying the one with the other. This kind of mediated access is often necessary these days, as our sacred interiors no longer house idols or holy texts, but courtrooms, banks, and retail.
