The Arch specifies place with a smooth, vague gesture, its infinite curves pushing back against particular questions. Arches have been used to signify historical connection, military victory, geographical trajectory, or projection into the future. An Arch is an open door without a wall, offering passage between two territories that it itself divides—making it one of the few classical monumental forms to suggest its own interaction with a visitor. It can seem that a magical field exists between the high peak of the keystone and the flat ground below, and that moving through this field will change the state of the passenger. This rarefied change is available to anyone though, and so its grandiosity contains an accidental generosity.
